TRANS-TASMAN SERVICE
REGULAR VOYAGES UNLIKELY
REFITTING OF LINERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 21. There is now little liklehood of any regular trans-Tasman passenger service operating until next year. The refit of the MonoWai in Australia has been delayed by industrial disputes, and is unlikely to be completed before the end of this year, and the return of the Aorangi to its pre-war Sydney-Auckland-Vancouver run after refitting is also indefinite. Although Matson ships may be able to carry some passengers between New Zealand and Australia, neither the Lurline, the Mariposa, nor the Monterey will be ready to resume the San Francisco-New Zealand-Australia service before the middle of this year. The assistant manager of the Union Steam Ship Company (Mr A. N. Leslie) said to-day that individual itinerary ships would be used for Tasman passenger traffic when available the Monowai and the Aorangi were refitted.
Mr F. W. Spite, chairman of the Overseas Shipowners’ Allotment Committee, said there wfes little likelihood of any diversion of British ships to this trade, as had been suggested.
