REPRESENTATIVE MATCH AT TIMARU WIN FOR CANTERBURY COLTS From Our Own Reporter ! TIMARU, January 21. Canterbury Colts gained a win by 10 wickets over South Canterbury, in a representative cricket match, which was completed at Timaru to-day. South Canterbury wickets fell cheaply in the second innings, especially when the Canterbury professional coach (J. H. Parks) took over the attack from the northern end of the Rectory Ground. At the other end the spin bowler, CandJisli, seemed to give the batsmen almost as much trouble. It was evident as the match progressed that South Canterbury was handicapped by the non-appearance of several of its usual representative players. In the circumstances the team put up a good performance, and its experience against the pick of Canterbury's younger players will no doubt prove most valuable. W’ith 92 runs on the board at the end of the first day’s play, and with five wickets in hand, Canterbury continued its innings this morning. The unbeaten batsmen, O’Malley and Collins, took the score to 129 before the latter was dismissed. Both started briskly and added nearly 30 in the first- half-hour. Scoring then became slower. O’Malley dug himself in and remained at the crease throughout the morning’s play and for an hour and a half in the afternoon. His score of 58 included 32 singles. Canterbury’s total of 227 left the home side with 86 runs to make to save an innings defeat. Few batsmen were comfortable against the consistent attack of the spin bowlers, and the only one to open up with any confidence was the captain, A. Souter, whose total of 31 was made smartly. Shortly before 5 o’clock. Parks and- Candlish took over and made quick work of the last five South Canterbury batsmen. In his 11 overs. Parks took five wickets for 14 runs and bowled four, maidens. Candlish finished with two for nine off seven overs. Canterbury was left with only nine to make, and this total was reached after seven balls had been bowled. Prattley, the South Canterbury bowler who took three wickets in the first day’s play, was not so dangerous to-day. A creditable performance was given by B. Roddick, whose 27 overs cost only 37 runs. He took two wickets and bowled 12 maidens. A feature of the Colts’ fielding was the brilliant wicket-keeping by R. Davey, who also showed excellent form when he was batting.
