TRUSTY SCOTT

MAY WIN AT- FORBURY PARK Trusty Scott indicated that he is returning to his best form by his forward displays at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and he should go close to winning a race this week. Starting from the 36 yards mark in the Dunedin Cup, Trusty Scott had 10 horses in front of him with a mile covered, but with five furlongs to go he had improved his position to follow Nyallo Scott, Cameronian, Parrish Lad, Gold Peg, and Dundee Sandy. Once into the back straight Trusty Scott commenced a brilliant run. which carried him up to Nyallo Scott and Cameronian at the entrance to the straight. The effort in the early stages left him without any reserve for the sprint home, and he was not disgraced when he was beaten out of the money. Paraded in the Flying Handicap later in the afternoon, Trusty Scott started smoothly from the 36 yards mark to work his way into seventh place at the end of three furlongs. He did not appear to get a clear passage during the first half of the race, but he finished particularly well over the last four furlongs to get to within half a head of Dundee Sandy. Trained at Ashburtcm by D. L. McGregor for Mrs W. T. Lowe, Trusty Scott has recorded a win and three minor placings this season, his win being registered at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting on August 31 when he finished brilliantly to win the Lightning Handicap from Watcher in 2min 42 3-ssec. Bred by W. T. Lowe, Hinds, he is by U. Scott from Trusty Maid, which is by Truman Direct from Tairene, by Wildwood Junior from Jessie 8., by Smith O’Brien from a Prickwillow mare. Jottings Sure Maid was an expensive favourite in the Vauxhall Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Driven by M. Holmes, who made a hurried trip to the meeting to drive her, Sure Maid never flattered the judgment of her supporters at any stage of the race. Sadie Axworthy’s colt foal by Sir Michael is a handsome individual bearing the imprint of his sire. The fast pace set by Brown Shadow and Indigo in the Electric Handicap at, Forbury Park kept Indigo struggling and he was beaten into fourth place at the finish.

Mount Mellick was never a possibility in the Southland Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday. Local Gold is nicely placed in the Otahuhu Handicap on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, and she may earn one of the prizes. Bargain Horse Punctual, the winner of the King George Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, was recently purchased by S. Hands from Mr R. McEwin for two shillings and a contingency out of the first win. Usually regarded as a “wet weather” horse. Punctual was ignored by investors at the Forbury Park meeting, but it is reported that his owner was optimistic regarding his chance and profited accordingly. There was no semblance of a fluke about Punctual’s win, and the manner in which he won in the smart time of 3min 16sec indicates that he should be hard to beat in the Royal Handicap on the second day of the meeting. A Well-bred Mare

Sister Mary, which won several races in the interests of Mr W. R. Anderson, has a colt foal at foot by Light Brigade. ..When she was retired from the race-track Sister Mary was mated with Josedale Dictator, and to him she produced a colt, which already shows a lot of ability at the trotting gait. A well-bred mare. Sister Mary is by Guy Parrish from Sister Maud, which left a winner in Sister Rose to Rey de Oro. Bred by Mrs M. Duncan, Christchurch, Sister Maud is by Nelson Bingen from Lady Derby, by Rothschild from a famous producer in Norice. Afatinee Meeting

The Canterbury Owners' and Breeders’ Association will conduct a matinee meeting at Addington on February 4. The programme is designed to attract horses which will be racing at the New Brighton and Canterbury Park Trotting Clubs’ meetings. One of tire feature events of the day will be a parade for two-year-olds, and this should attract much attention, as it will be the first appearance of most of the youngsters on the Addington track. Sent Home

Loyal Peter showed good form at his first start for the season when he led all the way to win the Canterbury Handicap by three lengths from Dundee Sandy in 4min 20 3-ssec at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on November 2; but he has disappointed in his races since then and he has been sent home to his owner, Mr W. B. Somerville, Kelso, for a spell. A smart pacer when on his best behaviour, Loyal Peter is by Grattan Loyal from Erin’s Fortune, which left other winners in Erinack and Sea Fortune to Wrack. A good winner herself, his dam, Erin’s Fortune, which took a record of 2min lOsec several years ago. is by Erin’s King from the Stirling Lad mare, Miss Fortune. Paying His Way Scotch Music brought his record to seven minor placings in 10 starts this season, when he recorded 4min 22 3-sseo to earn the third prize of £175 in the Dunedin Cup at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Owned by Mr A. Wyber and trained at Addington by G. S. Smith, the son of Grattan Loyal and Scotch Dew is now at the top of his form and a winning turn should soon come his way. Sandy Grey Sandy Grey, which has been trained for his recent races by A. J. Kemble, Auckland, has been returned to his owner and he is to be spelled before being tried again. A grey gelding by Sandydale from Grey Girl. Sandy Grey showed encouraging form when trained at Addington by C. Tasker for Mr J. Harding in the early part of the season. Trained at Invercargill Lord Grattan showed some ability when he set the pace for about a mile in the Vauxhall Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting, but he lost his chance when he went to a break and was out of the contest when he settled down to trot again. Owned by Mr A. O. Collings and trained by A. J. McLellan, Invercargill,- Lord Grattan Is the 1938 foal of Grattan Loyal and Our Nurse. Bred in 1914 by Mr G. Hood, Southbrook, Our Nurse was by Wildwood Jnr. from Imperial Polly, by Prince Imperial from Polly, which was supposed to have been a thoroughbred. A good producer. Our Nurse left a family of winners, including Probationer, Chevalier, and Sister Polly to Wrack, Sure to Peter Chenault.' Salalon to Adioo Guy. Night Nurse to Wellington Direct, and Come Away to Arion Axxv orthy.

Did Not Impress The Quite Sure gelding, Monagh Leagh, which raced as a pacer in the early pait

of the season, did not impress when he raced as a trotter in the Otago Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Monagh Leagh lost

ground when he broke at the start and he was always toiling a long wav at the rear of the field. Marlborough Meeting

Several Canterbury trainers have signified their intention of attending the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting, which will be held on the Waterlea course, Blenheim, on February 1, and the meeting should prove very successful. At one time transport prevented many owners and trainers from making the trip, but now that the railway line has been completed the problem has been overcome and horses which are loaded on the train at Christchurch in the evening arrive at Blenheim the next morning. May Race at Auckland

Besides the trotter Olympus, J. Folev is working an attractive two-vear-ofd colt by Grattan Loyal from the Rev de Oro mare Baby Rey, at Addington. ‘ The colt, which has not been set any serious tasks yet. may race in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes at the Auckland Trotting Clubs meeting next montb.
