CHINESE SHIPPING DISASTER
TUG BLAMED FOR COLLISION (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI. Jan. 20. The Tungchi Steamship Company, operators of the steamer Chikiang, which sank at the mouth of the Whang - poo river, 20 miles from Shanghai, 400 to 500 passengers being drowned, issued a statement blaming the tug for the collision which sank the ship on January 18, and alleging that the tug fled after the impact without offering assistance to the ship’s stricken passengers. The statement added that the Chikiang’s captain jumped overboard in a futile attempt to force the tug to turn round and pick up survivors. The Shanghai District Court announced that it would investigate the disaster.
