FIGHTING IN ANNAM
MOVE TO LIBERATE CAPITAL
FRENCH LAND AND SEA OPERATIONS
PARIS, January 19. French forces yesterday launched land and sea operations aimed at liberating Hue, capital of Annam. French Army Headquarters at Tourane reported that the French garrison at Hue, comprising only one battalion, which has- been besieged since December 19, is still holding out successfully. It has beaten on attacks by 5000 Viet Nam troops, who daily subject the French to barrages from two artillery pieces. The French regularly parachute food military and medical equipment to tne garrison. The morale of the troops and civilians is said to be good. The Ministry of National Defence has announced that the cruiser Duquesne has reached Indo-China with reinforcements, including a battalion of the French air-borne division. -
