RIVAL GEORGIAN GOVERNORS

ALLEGED ILLEGAL OFFICIALS APPOINTMENTS MADE IN OPPOSITION (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 19. The Lieutenant-Governor of Georgia (Mr M. E. Thompson), who proclaimed himself Acting-Governor yesterday and declared that Mr Herman Talmadge had been elected illegally to the governorship, has appointed a number of departmental officials in opposition to Mr Talmadge’s appointees. Mr Thompson announced to-day that he had instructed the Attorney-General to proceed against the use of State funds by Mr Talmadge’s “illegal officials.” and would demand to-morrow that Mr Talmadge hand over the executive offices. Commenting on Mr Thompson’s statement that he would demand possession of the executive offices to-day, Mr Talmadge, who occupied the Governor’s office, which was under a guard of State troopers said: “It is my purpose to hold the Governor’s office and perform my duties within the law. We won’t yield to any threat or bow to force. We are amply able to defend the Governor’s office and will do so if necessary."
