U.S. DOMESTIC SHIPPING
OWNERS REFUSE TO RESUME CONTROL <Rec. 8 p.m.> WASHINGTON, Jan. 14. American domestic shipping operators have refused to take back control of their pre-war fleets "because they fail to see any possibility of profitable operation, in spite of a subsidy offer of 150,000 dollars a year for each Victory ship and 130,000 dollars for other cargo carriers. Confronted with their immovable position of the companies, the Maritime Commission has requested an extension of its operating authority until •June 30. The commission has been losing 12,000.000 dollars a year in operatthe domestic fleets. The companies contend that the Government should continue to operate the fleets until the labour situation is stabilised and industry has made further progress toward normality, thus providing shipping with payable cargoes
