UNSIGHTLY DUMPS

Sir, —The letters of “Papanui Resident” and “A.L.8.” to “The Press” are of interest to residents in other districts where similar eyesores are conspicuous and in one instance at least allowed to increase. ‘ Examples: Sumner road, just past the old site of tramway tanks. Rubbish dump, Sumner road (McCormack’s Bay), an eyesore which is increasing in frontage on the road each month. The remarks of the chairman of the City Council town planning committee are of interest. Here is an opportunity for 'he City Council to take inexpensive steps to prevent its own controlled property being allowed to become a bigger eyesore than necessary. Sumner Council expressed the hope that the McCormack’s Bay dump would not be allowed by the Christchurch City Council to become unsightly, seemingly with little effect.—Yours, etc., G. H. CONGREVE. December 9, 1946. [The City Engineer (Mr E. Somers), to whom this letter was referred, said the dump near the tankshis on private land. At McCormack’s Bay the mud flats are being covered and the head of the tip must necessarily be, to some extent, untidy. The rest of the area was being kept in reasonable condition.]
