EROSION AT REDCLIFFS

Sir, —The photographs published by you showing the damage done to the sea wall at Redcliffs proves the futility of building this type of wall, which consists of stone, laid on the mud rubble filling behind, through which the tide percolates, and a concrete capping on top. Years ago when on the Sumner Borough Council, I- protested against this type of wall and advocated a wall of concrete piles driven into the mud, the filling behind to be obtained by dredging mud from the Estuary. This method would give a wall which would not suffer from erosion and an ideal place for boats to moor against. Also, the mud filling would prevent saturation of low-lying land at high tide, and the water would be deepened. In view of the proposals to improve the Estuary, I have placed my suggestions before the authorities.—Yours, etc., V. E. HAMILTON. December 17,- 1946.
