NEW EGYPTIAN TREATY

LATEST BRITISH PROPOSALS PLANS FOR JOINT DEFENCE (N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 20. The Alexandria correspondent •of the “Daily Telegraph” says it is understood that the terms of the latest British proposals for the new BritishEgyptian treaty are as follows: Joint defence plans: (1) in case of a threat to either of them, the two countries will enter into Consultations on measures necessary to meet the threat. (2) In the event of war or aggression, Egypt will come to Britain’s assistance by all means in her power in adjacent countries. Sudan: (1) the administration will remain as defined by the 1899 convention and the 1936 treaty, and Egypt will recognise the right of the Sudanese to decide their own future. (2) In the event of the Sudanese ultimately deciding to become entirely independent, Britain and Egypt will enter into negotiations to ensure the protection of Egypt’s material interests. (3) On the question of sovereignty, Egypt has the right to claim the sovereignty of the Sudan, but Britain has not the right to approve Egypt’s demand.
