HOUSING SHORTAGE IN HAMBURG

NO MORE EVICTIONS OF GERMANS (Rec. 8 p.m.) BERLIN, Sept 19. The “Hamburg Project” under which the British Control Commission proposed to move its headquarters from Berlin to Hamburg before the spring of 1947, has been postponed at least until the spring of 1948, mainly because of Hamburg’s acute housing shortage. A British spokesman said that no further evictions of Germans would be necessary for a considerable time. Only 3,500,000 houses of 5,500,000 in the British zone of Germany are habitable. The population has increased by 3,000,000 since 1939 to 23,000,000.
