FAROE ISLANDS PLEBISCITE
ATTITUDE OF DANISH GOVERNMENT (Rec. 7 p.m.) COPENHAGEN, Sept. 20. The Faroe Islands have been proclaimed - a State as the result of the plebiscite. The Danish Foreign Minister (Mr G. Rassmussen) said he was unable to comment until the Government had considered the problem. “The action of the Faroe Islands Parliament in proclaiming the islands a separate State was ‘against the Danish constitution’,” said the Danish Minister of Finance (Professor T. Kristensen), quoted Jy Reuter’s Copenhagen correspondent. “If the Parliament wants to take such a step it must apply to the Danish Government.”
The Danish administration of the Faroes is continuing as usual. The plebiscite, held on September 14, resulted in 5651 votes in favour of separating from Denmark and becoming a republic against 5491 for the Danish Government’s proposal for a liberal measure of self-government for the islands under the Danish Crown. There were 480 invalid votes.
