ERUPTIONS AT NIUAFOOU
.REPORT BY R.N.Z.A.F. PILOT MEDICAL AID SENT BY SHIP (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) SUVA, September 20. Eruptions at Niuafoou Island in the Tongan group are continuing and the area of devastation is spreading, reports the pilot of a Royal New Zealand Air Force aeroplane which circled the island yesterday. A Catalina aeroplane from American Samoa dropped supplies at a part of the island still beyond reach of the lava flow. No direct communication has yet been established with the stricken island, but the Tongan Government ship Hifofua is expected to reach Niuafoou to-day with medical aid, and an American tanker, which changed its course, is also expected there to-day. The New Zealand Government’s offer to send the corvette Arbutus has been referred by the High Commissioner for the West Pacific at Suva to the Government of Tonga but no reply has yet been received.
