CHARGE AGAINST ARCHBISHOP
JUGOSLAV CATHOLIC LEADER ARRESTED
“CRIMES AGAINST THE PEOPLE ”
BELGRADE, September 18. A Jugoslav Government communique announces that the head of the Roman Catholic Church in Jugoslavia, Archbishop Alojzijc Stepinac, has been arrested and charged with “crimes against the people.” .The correspondent of the Associated Press says that this action is believed to have resulted from testimony at the trial of 18 persons, 12 of whom were priests, on charges of associating with the Ustachi Crusaders* groups, which are in opposition to the Government Two of the witnesses, a Franciscan priest and the archbishop’s secretary, Ivan Shalic, linked the archbishop with the Ustachi. Shalic told the court that the archbishop’s castle at Zagreb was the centre of the Ustachi Crusader terrorist action.
