ROUTE OF FIRE ENGINES

Sir, —I would like to add a few remarks to “Vigilant’s” letter regarding the necessity of a siren at the corner of Colombo and Tuam streets. Lichfield street is a compulsory tram stop; and this slows down traffic considerably. Tuam street is not a compulsory stop, and some “speed-happy” tram drivers seem to think this corner is the end of a “measured mile.” It is hard enough for a car driver, let alone a tram driver, to hear the siren of an approaching fire engine. Then, Lichfield street only goes two blocks past Colombo street and Tuam street goes four, besides being the direct route to Riccarton. I would suggest putting a siren on the Tuam street-Colombo street crossing before there is a “firstclass pile-up.”—yours, etc., VIGILANT No. 2. September 19, 1946.
