DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS
PRESENTATION TO AIRMAN’S MOTHER (P.A.) PALMERSTON NORTH. September 19. The first official act of the visit to Palmerston North of the GovernorGeneral (Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C.) was the holding of an investiture at the home of Mrs M. H. Harkness, where he presented to her the Distinguished Flying Cross won by her son, Warrant Officer D. A. Harkness, in January, 1944. He died in the Middle East in July of the same year as the result of an accident. Mrs Harkness’s other son also won the Distinguished Flying Cross. The citation stated that Warrant Officer Harkness proved himself of great value to his squadron on many occasions. In January, 1944, he was detailed to bomb Celina, Italy. In spite of poor weather and engine trouble, < he completed his mission and returned safely, even though his port engine failed. He had to fly three hours on one engine. At all times he displayed outstanding gallantry and resource.. The Governor-General, accompanied by Lady Freyberg, was given a civic reception and entertained at a civic lunch.
