VIOLENCE IN GREECE
Many Political Murders CONFERENCE IN ATHENS (N2XJ. Official Naw, Servlet) LONDON. May 6. A recent big increase in the number of political murders in Greece has resulted in talks in Athens among the Prime Minister <M. Tsaldaris), the Minister of Public Order (M. Theotokis), the chief of the British Police Mission in Greece (Sir Charles Wickham), and the chief of the Athens City Police (Mr Evanghelos), says Reuter’s correspondent in Athens. He estimated that an average of three people were murdered \ery 24 hours: The former Prime Ministers (Mr Sofoulls and Mr Papandreous) to-day expressed alarm about the situation and forecast a continuation, and even a possible increase in the killings. Mr Sofoulis blamed ultra-monarchist supporters and extreme Right Wing elements "in the police gendarmerie, which, he said, as a result of the advent of a Royal Government, regarded themselves as free to act with impunity. ‘ , Mr Papandreous ascribed the majority of the killings to Communist provocation. but said that certain police elements were associating themselves with the factions.
