JAPANESE WAR CRIMINALS
TRIAL BEGINS ON JUNE 3 (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) _ TOKYO, May 6. „The president of the War Crimes Tribunal (Sir William Webb) announced at to-day’s session that the trial of Japanese war criminals would begin on June 3. He overruled an objection by the defence that the interval was too short. He said that evidence for the defence would be presented for a month after the prosecution had completed its case. However, the tribunal would meet again on May 13 to permit the defence to renew its challenge that the Court lacked jurisdiction in pending cases. A Japanese lieutenant, Takasaki, nicknamed “The Frog,” and a Korean guard, Kaneshiro, nicknamed “The Undertaker,’’ have been sentenced to death by hanging by a war crimes tribunal at Singapore. Both men were known to thousands of Allied war prisoners who built the Burma-Siam railway.
Takasaki and Kaneshiro were charged with responsibility and complicity in the execution of British war prisoners who attempted to escape. Six British soldiers were bayoneted to death.
Kaneshiro, telling the story of the executions, said that he was still haunted by the men he had bayoneted.
