U.S. LOAN FOR BRITAIN
NEW PROPOSAL IN , SENATE
EFFECT OF FRESH AMENDMENT (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.) (Itec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 5. Senator McFarland (Democrat, Arizona) stated tb-day that the cha’nces look increasingly good for his amendment to the British loan resolution making the loan contingent upon the British granting full title to the WestHemispnere bases now held under a 99-year lease. The amendment also provides for the commercial use of airports built up by the United States in the British Empire.
Administration leaders state that any amendment of such a character would scuttle the credit agreement because it would necessitate renegotiation. Although they acknowledge that Senator McFarland’s proposal is likely to attract more votes than any other proposed change they think that they have enough votes to defeat the amendment.
