JURY SERVICE
Sir, —Every three months, when jurymen are gathered together, the vexed question of adequate payment for service is discussed by the men who have been elected to see that British justice must prevail. Thoughtheir duties are important, the scales of justice weigh lightly when it comes to payment for jury service; 12s 6d, less tax, seems ’to me a ridiculously low remuneration for the . onerous duty they are asked to perform. Discontented juries are a danger where important findings are expected. Legislation to increase jurymen’s pay is long overdue.—Yours, etc., R. F. DOWNS. May 2, 1946.
