VICTORY STAMPS

Sir,—To some extent I am in agreement with W. A. Sutton in his criticism of the peace stamp issue; but I would not condemn the whole series. Certainly, some of them are spoilt by a central emblem or design, huge ih detail compared with the rest of the picture; and it should not have been necessary to have gone but of New Zealand to symbolise peace. One of the stamps in the set has the appearance of being an unfinished design. Of course, the department may have set a standard to go by; and this would no doubt hinder the artist. I would very much like to know why tenders were not called for the issue and the opportunity was not given to others to help in designing the series, as has been done in some of the past issues. —Yours, etc., WATERMARK. Timaru, April 30, 1946.
