THREE MILES WALK RECORD BROKEN

CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS FOR FIRST DAY (P.A.) WANGANUI. March 1. Clipping 12 l-ssec off the New Zealand record, J. R. Hyslop. Otago, won the three miles walk at Cook’s Gardens to-day, when the New Zealand amateur athletic championship meeting opened. Hyslop won by nearly 200 yards from Brown, Canterbury, and registered 21 minutes 24 2-5 seconds compared with the previous record of 21niin 36 3-ssec, set by H. E. Kerr, Wellington, in 1911. Of 10 championship events listed on the programme to-day, five were heats, the finals of which will be decided to-mor-row. Three field titles were decided. In the broad jump championship. P. V. Goddard (Auckland) won the title, his distance being 22ft Olin, beating the titleholder. M. Carr (Canterbury) by one foot. Competing in the pole vault championship. W. Heron iAuckland) retained his title, registering lift 3in. The new titleholder for the discus throw is A. E. Redmon J (Wellington), with a throw of 124 ft 2in.

Heats decided were for the 120 yards hurdles, the 100 yards, 220 yards hurdles, an 4 220 yards, all championship events. Placed first in the first heat of the 220 yards hurdles. A. R. P. Eustace (Auckland) covered the distance in 25 l-ssec, only 2-ssec off the New Zealand record. The surprise in the second heat of the 120 yards hurdles was the win by O. Hunter (Wellington) over Eustace, who ran second.

Also decided was the one mile championship, won by J. C. Grierson (Auckland) in 4min 21 3-ssec. He beat M. L. Marshall and N. H. Ambler, both of Auckland, second and third respectively. Auckland (holder) is leading with 10 points for the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Shield, which goes to the centre gaining most points in championship events. Otago <4) is second, and Canterbury is third. Otago and Auckland, three points each, are leading for the Queensland Jubilee Commemoration Shield, held by Canterbury. This is awarded to the centre whose representatives obtain most points in records and best New Zealand performances and standards. Wellington, one point, is in third place. Results were (Auckland.
