STATE
“A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN” The novel by Betty Smith, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” is brilliantly portrayed on the screen in a picture of the same name which opens at the State Theatre to-day. The setting is in a typical tenement street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 1915, when fire escapes straggled down the faces of dirty brick buildings. Horses plodded along the streets, pulling assorted drays and waggons, poorlydressed people moved along the sidewalk, while on one corner stood a saloon —McGarrity’s Saloon—offering beer at five cents a mug. The picture revolves round this background in a number of moving scenes. Produced by 20th Century Fox, the picture marks that company’s thirtieth anniversary in the film business, and little expense was spared in producing this masterpiece to mark the occasion. The cast is a particularly brilliant one, including Dorothy McGuire, Joan Biondell, James Dunn, Lloyd Nolan, and the new child star, 12-year-old Peggy Ann Garner.
