WESTPORT BAR
STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF MARINE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 26. The position of the Westport bar should be well known to Westport people,” said the Minister of Marine (the Hon. J. O’Brien), commenting on the report from Westport, calling for immediate action to improve Wenport harbour. Mr O’Brien said that two dredges were taken away from Westport by the Navy early in the war. These had since been repaired and returned, and for about 18 months they had been working continuously. Before the war a large dredge had been ordered from Britain, but as a result of the war that project -had been held up. Howtever, some six months ago instructions had been given to the engineers to reorder a larger dredge, but it would take 18 months to two years before this could be delivered. There had been an engineering disagreement, continued Mr O'Brien, as to the efficacy of some of the suggested works to improve the bar, but it was expected that this would be overcome in the near future and that there would be agreement on a plan that could be put in hand at an early date. In the meantime, everything possible was being done to improve the bar. Other than the two dredges at present in use there was no other dredge in New Zealand suitable to operate on the Westport bar.
