DR. MARSDEN’S ADDRESS

Sir,—We do not require a distinguished Russian anthropologist to tell us that war is only possible when mankind has become to some extent organised; and it Is equally obvious that the more highly and completely communities become organised, the more destructive does war become. “L.8.8.’5” assertion that scientists have demonstrated their ability to solve social problems is open to question: the need has already arisen and is clamant. Ought we to send a few distinguished chemists, biologists, etc., to the San Francisco conference? There is a widespread feeling, which has been voiced recently in British journals, that faith in science as the saviour of mankind has been misplaced, and that we must look elsewhere for guidance.—Yours. CtC " NOT SATISFIED. April 17,1945.

Sir,—“ Pro Vita" quotes Bromislav Malinovsky as saying that “war has ceased to be an effective instrument of national policy.” Unfortunately, the Germans and Japanese appear-to be convinced to the contrary. If we had been prepared for World War No. II it would never have happened; at least, I. have never heard of gangsters attack-1 ing a man who was waiting for them behind a ms chine-gun. If we follow , pr Marsden's advice there will be no World War No. Ill; if we again disarm we make it inevitable. Surely the right policy for the peace-loving nations is: 1. Police the world, 1.e.. establish security for the Whole world. 2. Do everything to promote the social welfare of all men everywhere throughout the world. Our own prosperity and haopiness are founded upon an efficient police force. Why not extend the same benefits to the whole world?— Yours, etC ” L.8.8. April 17, 1945.
