SMALL FORESTS

Sir,—Would you kindly read tree lucerne for true lucerne as in Saturday’s letter. Tree lucerne, Cytisus prplifera, formerly tagasaste, apparently Mexican, is a remarkable tree, with claims to be invaluable. It is evergreen and grows very fast, a young tree of mine spreading almost 33 feet across, sheltering and shading many other plants. I have seen self-seeding groves of it at the seaside at Woodend and Gore Bay. It may not thrive in the middle and upper zones of the plains, as the great growth of summer and autumn may be killed by early frost; When dry, the wood is very -hard and makes excellent firing. Being leguminous, it is a soil-enricher.—Yours, etc JAS. R. WILKINSON. Rangiora, April 15, 1945.
