U.S. FIGHTER ACE MISSING
WASHINGTON. Jan. 8. Major Gregory Boyington, who has equalled the American fighter ace record by shooting down a total of 26 aeroplanes, is missing in action. He has been in the Solomons. Joint holders of the record with Major Boyington are Major Joe Foss, of the United States Marine Corps, who shot 26 enemy aircraft in the Pacific, and Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, who was the American flying ace of the Great War.

LONDON. Jan. 8. Sixteen British and Indian merchant seamen, survivors of a crew of 72, many of whom were drowned when a Japanese submarine rammed their boats after sinking a freighter off the Indian coast, have reached New Delhi. One survivor said that the submarine, after sinking the ship, began methodically ramming and machinegunning the men in the boats and on rafts.

NEW YORK. Jan. 8. “The United States forces have taken only 377 Japanese said the Under-Secretary of War (Mr Robert Patterson). He explained that he published the figure to illustrate the difficulty of defeating Japan “We know the Japanese will defend themselves with fanatical zeal, added Mr Patterson. “This is attested to by the small number of prisoners taken.”
SURFACE RAIDER

(Rec. 8.20 p.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 8. It is officially announced that combined Brazilian and American air and sea units in the South Atlantic sank a German surface raider carrying supplies from Japan to Germany.
American Patrol Ship Sank.—The United States Navy Department has announced that the 1300-ton patrol ship, St. Augustine, was sunk in collision with a merchantman off Cape May, New Jersey. The St. Augustine was formerly the palatial Woolworth yacht, Noparo, frequently used by Barbara Hutton. The Noparo was built at Kiel and cost 1,250,000 dollars.
