CONTRACTS FOR VEGETABLES
SUGGESTION BY MR C. E. POPE
“As president of -the Christchurch Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association I would like to make comment on the statement made by Mr G. Knowles, vice-president of the Christchurch Commercial Gardeners’ Association in “The Press” to-day in reference to the dissatisfaction of growers with, the Government vegetable contract system,” said Mr C. E. Pope last evening. “My association has never deviated from its opposition to the contract system, nor would we compromise in any way with a system that would jeopardise the existence of the producer. We submit that, while condemning the contract system, an alternative plan of marketing is necessary as a solution to the problem confronting growers to-day. A producers’ co-operative market is the only constructive scheme which will meet with success from the producer and consumer’s point of view. I would submit the foregoing proposal as a solution to the complaints, stated by Mr Knowles.”
