MEASURES AGAINST RATS
—— “RESPONSIBILITY ON OWNERS AND OCCUPIERS”
The responsibility for keeping premises free from rats rests entirely on the owners or occupiers, not the local authority, said the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews) yesterday, He said he wished this made clear to the. public because of a reported statement by a member of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce that the Christchurch City Council was “passing the buck” in trying to interest members of the business community in a rat catching competition. Mr Andrews said the council gave all possible assistance and encouragement to property owners and occupiers, but the- final responsibility was theirs and failure to take adequate measures for the suppression of the pest could result in prosecution under the Health Act.
