The death has occurred of Sir James Joynton Smith, a well-known member of Australian business and sporting communities, at the age of 88. Born in London, he went to sea at the age of 14, later settling in Wellington, where he organised the Seamen’s and Firemen’s Union, and became the first president of the Cooks’ and Pastrymen’s Union of New Zealand.
He came to Sydney 50 years ago, and acquired big hotel and real estate interests here. He founded “Smith’s Weekly” and the “Daily Guardian,” but resigned the chairmanship of Smith’s Newspapers in 1939. He was prominent in horse racing and he assisted the introduction of Rugby League football into i' ustralia by guaranteeing the first Australian visit of a British side.
