TRANSPORT OF MILK

LICENCES GRANTED TO FARMERS’ COMPANY

DECISION OF LICENSING AUTHORITY

An application by the Canterbury Dairy Farmers’ Co-operative Milk Supply Company, Ltd., for three vehicle authorities for a goods service was granted by the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr T. H, Langford) at a sitting of the authority in Christchurch yesterday. Vehicles covered by the authorities will be used to pick up milk supplies in country districts adjacent to Christchurch, ‘ Mr C. S. Thomas, who appeared in support of the application, asked what would be the position of the company in respect of a transport licence held by one Griffiths, who was associated with the company, and who was now operating for it. In reply, Mr Langford said that any matters affecting the licence being applied for by the company and that held by Griffiths would be dealt with by the Milk Board. “Mr Harris, of United Dairies, approached me to-day and asked me for an opportunity for a discussion on this,” added Mr Langford. “I told him it could be referred to the Milk Board.”

The secretary of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance (Mr B. Taylor) said he did not wish to object to the application However, he added, there was set down for hearing by the Authority, an application by United Dairies, Ltd., for a licence covering a similar area to the Milk Supply Company’s application, and it appeared likely that there might be duplication of services. “United Dairies have withdrawn their application because they do not now pick up other people’s milk,” said Mr Langford, “They are now under the Christchurch Milk Committee.” Mr Langford added that Griffiths was a shareholder in the Milk Supply Company and was already picking up milk for it under his own transport licence. Whether Griffiths desired to continue as a licensed operator was largely for Griffiths to decide. However, there would be no duplication of operation, and no prejudicial effect on Griffiths if the Milk Supply Company’s application were granted.
