A proposal submitted by the Chine* muri Patriotic Zone Committee that, in future all money needed for patriotic work be raised by direct taxß*,j tion received little support at a meet* - ing of the Auckland Provincial Patn* otic Council to-night. . Mr W. M. Wallnutt, of Waihi, there was unanimous opinion in hOjv
area that taxation was the only eqU«B able, way, £pt the collection of suow ’ Several speakers opposed the proposal. It was stated that if the State collected the money, it would claim the right to disburse it, and it might be found that when, at a later stage, rehabilitation grants were made, any assistance given from the Patriotic Fund would be taken into account. The point was also made that many persons who now contributed to patriotic funds did not pay income tax, and they would be debarred from subscribing. The proposal was defeated by • large majority.
