COMMISSIONER CONTROL | TO BE RESTORED A review of Public Service condf* tions and restoration of full control b f the Public Service Commissioner wal promised by the Leader of the Nations Party (Mr S. G. Holland) in an election speech in the Rugby street schoolroonj yesterday. , He said that the basis of the Public Service consisted of well-trained,, effl* cient men who would serve any; Gov* eminent loyally, but in recent fjearl there had been.additions to it. Many . of the men coming in were being paw higher salaries than efficient offlcell with long service. For instance thf ■■ Director of Broadcasting was paid mow ,' than the Director-General of Health... He could not think that was rigbV, Then the head of the Internal Marketr - ing Division was paid more than any , other officer, more than the general., manager of railways, who had the responsibility of' an' investment ,<& £72,000,000, more than the head of-the,' Treasury, and more than the head of the Police Force. ■ :
Mr Holland said some of the lower - paid men in various branches of thl,; service were also receiving less than.--justice. If the National Party were re*/turned it would institute an inquiry ’ into the whole position. A Govern* ment could only be about as good a| the Public Service which had to ad* minister its policy.
