RICCARTON TRAMS

Sir,—lt is time that the drivers of Riccarton trams stopped the practice of sailing past tram stops, ignoring waiting passengers. It is no uncommon thing for three trams to sail past,, though there has been room for moire passengers. If it is necessary for the ttams to adopt non-stop express methods, then it is time for the service to be overhauled. I am not referring to isolated cases, but very frequent occurrences. Probably the drivers are not to blame; it is more likely the wretched system of one-man trams on this route. The Riccarton .people are easy-going, but perhaps in 10 years’ time they might object.—Yours, etc., PASSENGER. December 24, 1942, Sir,—lt is very unjust that tram travellers from Lower Riccarton arc constantly being penalised. On Sunday last the first tram from the terminus being so dreadfully overcrowded, innumerable would-be passengers were left on the pavements as the tram crawled slowly by gnd did not stop. The next tram that followed arrived in the Square at 12 o’clock, when all suburban and seaside trams had left. The Tramway Board has been approached on these matters, the reply courteous being that it has no remedy. Our councillors should now approach either the military authorities or the Government.—Yours, etc., WAKE UP RICCARTON. January 13, 1943.

[The general manager of the Christchurch Tramway Board (Mr H. E. Jarman) said that arrangements have already been made to provide an extra tram and trailer on this trip in future.]
