SCHOOLBOY FARM LABOUR
Sir,—After, reading “Nattie’s” most enlightening letter about wages on farms; I began to realise how much farmers are making out of these boys. Here is the position: lads from 15 years upwards are sacrificing their holidays to assist the war effort and let men free for the Army. This is more than the average person is doing and is indeed a noble effort. But I do think in fairness to the boys that their wages be increased some small amount, so that by the end of the first week they might be able to pay for their travelling expenses. I certainly don’t think they should receive £4 Bs, but if the Government is going to take off so much in taxes, surely their wages could be increased a little.—Yours, etc., BOY. January 13, 1943.
