LABOUR FOR WESTLAND BRIDGE
♦ TWENTY MEN TRANSFERRED FROM CANTERBURY The problem of labour which has confronted the Public Works Department in the task of repairing the bridge across the Big Wanganui river is to be met to a large extent by the transfer of about 20 experienced men from Canterbury. They are expected to arrive at Greymouth on Thursday, and their presence on the job will increase the number of workmen to about 50. Two shifts of eight hours each are now being worked. In spite of unexpected difficulties in the shape of huge boulders weighing several tons, on the riverbed, satisfactory progress is being made, and so far 11 piles have been driven. It is not possible to deviate from the normal procedure and these piles must be driven through the heavy rock base. Boarded tents for accommodation and a large cookhouse have been erected on the north bank of the river.
