OBITUARY
MR J. MCTIGUE The death occurred at Ashburton yesterday of Mr James McTigue, formerly one of the most versatile athletes in the Ashburton County. He was equally successful in flat races, hurdling, long jumping, and pole vaulting, and won many championships, including the New Zealand hop, step, and jump championship. He competed at many sports meetings in Canterbury and other parts of the Dominion. He was better than the average at swimming and Rugby football, and represented South Canterbury at football in 1898.; Mr McTigue was a swimming and diving judge at Ashburton swimming carnivals for many years, and was a member of the Hibernian Society. He was born at Ashburton 65 years ago. MR J. P. CLIFF The death occurred recently at Geraldine of Mr J. P. Cliff, who had been in business as a tailor at Geraldine for 38 years. Mr Cliff was born in Christchurch in 1871, and went to Geraldine 40 years ago., He took a keen interest in orchestral work and was a member of the Geraldine Orchestra and a dance orchestra. He is survived by his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Annie E. Parkes (Christchurch). and two sons, Messrs Raymond Cliff (Pleasant Point), and Clarence Cliff (Auckland), and two daughters. Miss Elsie Cliff and Mrs Spencer Bennington (Waimate).
