FEMALE LABOUR IN RURAL AREAS
WITHDRAWAL DISCOURAGED It is the Government’s policy to discourage, so far as it is possible, the withdrawal of female labour from rural areas. This information is given by the Minister of National Service (the Hon. A. McLagan) in reply to a letter from the North Canterbury, District Council of Primary Production dealing with the position of domestics in the country and essential help for farmers’ wives. The Minister says that, with a view to checking the movement of labour from rural to urban areas, it is the practice to approach all volunteers for the three defence services as to thejr willingness to undertake duty in the Women’s Land Service. In addition, instructions have been issued to District Manpower Officers that girls employed on essential work in rural districts should not be considered as subjects for direction into industry. “The whole position is under very close observation and every effort is made to ensure that the continued employment of women in the country is not disturbed.” concludes the Minister.
