A.I.F. CASUALTIES IN MALAYA
♦ MIDDLE EAST TOTAL EXCEEDED (8.0. W.) RUGBY, March 13. Australian casualties in Singapore and Malaya generally totalled 17,031, comprising 287 officers and men killed before the battle of Singapore commenced, and 16.744 missing. The figures include those killed and wounded on Singapore Island. These figures were announced by the Australian Army Minister (Mr F. M. Forde), who added that Australian casualties in the Middle East, including prisoners, wore 13,335. The Minister said that the Malayan and Singapore total was based on calculations because definite information about A.I.F. losses ceased soon after the fall of Singapore.
