TROTTING NOTES

Well Related Volterra. engaged in the Timaru Nursery Stakes to-day, is owned by C. S. Donald, and is by Lusty Volo— Auditress, the dam of Audition, who has shown promising form lately. Volterra is one of the early progeny m New Zealand of Lusty Volo, whose recent death was* a severe loss to breeding in the Dominion. Well-bred Juveniles A number of really good race mares of a few years ago are represented in the Timaru Nursery Stakes to-day, and included is Sea Pearl, who, bred at Durbar Lodge. Ashburton, was later purchased by the Auckland sportsman Mr G. McMillan, for whom she won several good races. Sea Pearl’s foal is Lucky Gem, by the dual New Zealand Cup winner Lucky Jack. If performance on the race track were the only consideration in breeding Lucky Gem would be a warm favourite. Both his sire and dam were among the best pacers raced in New Zealand. Another well-bred one is Captain Morant, by Rey de Oro—Bonny Logan, while Tam o’Shanter is by U. Scott from a fine trotter in Escapade, Free Advice, a fine race mare and a proved producer, has Free Again, by Jack Potts, to represent her. and Becky de Oro. who won several races when trained by F. G. Holmes, is the dam of Bonny Volo. who will race in the nomination of Mrs N. M. Cornbridge and D. M. Clarke. Timaru Acceptances Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to be held to-day number 117, three more than at the corresponding meeting last year. This year’s field for the Timaru Cup numbers 12. against eight last year, but the biggest drop is in the Wai-iti Handicap, tor which there are 10 acceptors; against 23 12 months ago.
