REPAIRS TO POST OFFICE CLOCK

* — “ ONLY TEMPORARY MEASURE ” "As you have probably noticed, the time-keeping has greatly deteriorated since the old batteries wore out and several complaints have been received,’’ stated a report on repairs to the Post Office clock submitted by the general manager of the Municipal Electricity Department to the City Council last evening. . , "The new work to be earned out will, it is hoped, remedy these defects and’ ensure a further period of satisfactory working, though it must still be kept in mind that anything short of replacing the whole mechanism is only a temporary measure." The report stated that materials for the rewiring and renewing of electrical equipment had come to hand and the wiring department would begin the work next week. “Owing to the rapid rise in the price of materials, particularly electric motors and the rectifier, the work will be more expensive than was previously anticipated, but the changeover to alternating current working, and the rewiring of the clock tower should get over the frequent stopping of the clock which has occurred in the past. The cost will be £4O 12s 9d. which includes a small battery and rectifier at £l6 9s 4d, and'two A.C. i-horse-power motors at £l4 135,”
