RETURNED SOLDIERS AND POLITICS

CHRISTCHURCH ATTITUDE Apparently the change suggested for Auckland of deleting the Word “nonparty" from the constitutioh of the Returned Soldiers’ Association would not be favoured by the Christchurch Mr D. W. Russell, president of the Christchurch association, who was asked yesterday to comment on the report from Auckland, said that any question of general principle was one for the Dominion president to comment on. The matter had not been discussed in Christchurch, but it was his personal view that the Christchurch association, which, incidentally, had the largest membership of any in New Zealand, was quite happy as it was, As far as he was concerned as its president, he had never found any indication that it desired to bfe political in any way. “It is my view that we consider," Mr Russell added, “that the Dominion headquarters have done a very good job, that the various Governments have met us in reasonable requests that have been put forward from time to time, and that our association to-day is as strong as it can be and that we do not feel that being political in any sense of the word would further advance our position."
