GYMNASTIC DISPLAY

Y.M.C.A. CARNIVAL Many unusual effects were presented at the annual gymnastic carnival by members of the Christchurch Y.M.C.A. gymnasium at the Radiant Hall. The display was far more than a demonstration of the variety of the work done in the gymnasium; it was an entertainment that was always interesting and frequently speptacuiar. In the varied programme several items were outstanding—some of them old favourites. Quite early, junior girls presented the “Spirit of Spring.” and soon after, intermediate girls, in "Pyramids.” achieved striking effects. Several new classics appeared in “Statuettes.” Women’s classes swinging lighted clubs won deserved applause in “Wailomo,” and also in ”Wa}lK Time.” Apart from these, the items were keyed fairly closely to normal gymnasium work, with ground exercises and tumbling by the men’s class, novelty work by junior and primary ooys, iron wands by secondary boys, introductory exercises, and military tattoo by the women’s class, and “Little Lanterns” by the junior girls. The second part of the programme began with gymnastic dance steps by secondary school girls, followed by the men with a demonstration of work on the parallel bars. The men also snowed work on the horse, free exercises, and ladder pyramids. Women's classes appeared in free exercises and circle drill. Those assisting with musical and other items included Miss Edna Graham. and Messrs A. Hanlpy. Claude O’Hagan. J. Broughan, and N. and D. McCrackem
