RESERVE BANK RETURN
* STERLING EXCHANGE INCREASE SLIGHTLY LARGER NOTE ISSUE The principal alteration in the weekly return o£ the Reserve Bank as at the close of business on September 22, is an increase in sterling exchange of £1,478,834, the total exchange now being £15.991,722. Other changes are of a minor nature except that liabilities to the banks have increased by £2,263,803, whilst those to the State have declined by £1,297,956. Details are as follows: Liabilities.—(l) General reserve fund, £1,500,000 (same): (2) bank notes, £22,337,847 ( + £195,651); (3) demand liabilities (a): State £7,722.814 (-£1.297,956); (b) banks. £10.319.702 (+£2,263.803); (c) other, £762,746 ( + £51,609); (4) time deposits. nil (same); (5) liabilities in currencies other than New Zealand, £17,251 ( + £7,132); other liabilities, £1.218,801 ( + £239.956); total. £43,879,102 ( + £1,459,194). Assets.—(7) Reserve (a); Gold, £2,801,374 (same): (b) sterling exchange. £15,991,722 ( + £1,478,834); (c) gold exchange nil (same); (8) subsidiary cein, £44,944 ( and agricultural bills, nil (same); (10) advances (a) to the State or State under£6,607.383 ( poses, £12,500.000 (same): (b) to other public authorities, nil (same); (c) other, £200,000 (same): (11) investments, £3,822,858 (same): (12) bank buildings, nil (same): (13) other assets. £1,830,378 ( + £255,398); total, £43,879,162 ( + £1,459,194). Proportion of reserve (No. 7 less No. 5) to notes and other demand liabilities, 45.637 per cent, (last week 43,337 per cent.).
