1 “NO EASY PATH TO OUR GOAL” SIR HARRY BATTERBEE’S VIEWS (P.A.) DUNEDIN, September 25. “It has been said that in my address at Christchurch I took a somewhat gloomy view,” said the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, Sir Harry Batterbee, in an address at a luncheon arranged by the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce. “I am quite confident about the final result of the war, but there is no easy path to the goal of our desires. “We will, in the last resort, have to depend on our own right arm for victory. It has been the British way through all the ages. ‘Bloo and toil and tears’ must still be our motto, if we are going to win a victory. I am convinced that we have got to put into the winning of it a greater and more intensive effort than we have put in yet. If we do that, if we put into the war effort all our energy all our resources, and all our resolve, then, under God, we can be quite confident as to the final issue. But it is, believe me, oh that condition and on that condition alone.”
