The engagement is announced of Iris Daphne, only daughter of Mr and Mrs P. E. Neilson, Gray street, Fairlie, to Allan Dudley, ’ second son of Mr and Mrs G. Kelly, Winchmore, Ashburton.
The engagement is announced of Barbara Ann, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. L. Color'd 3lls - Rakaia, to David John, eldest son of Mr D. F. Oldridge’ and the late Mrs Oldridge, Redcliffs.
FISH RETAILERS’ BALL
The Christchurch Fish Retailers entertained their guests well at their annual ball, which they held at the Winter Garden last night. In addition to the usual supper, they added a “supper de luxe,” served late on the programme, to revive tiring dancers. George Bradford’s orchestra played dance music, and proceeds were in aid of Red Cross funds.
Members of the enterprising committee were Messrs W. G. Yates (president), T. A. Perry (honorary secretary), J. Wilson. L..W. Broad, G. Noonan, and A. .B. McKenzie. : Guests of honour were the Mayor, Mr E.H. Andrews, and the Mayoress, Miss E. Couzins, and the Town Clerk, Mr H. S. Feast, and Mrs’Feast.
WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION
marshland branch
Mrs Walter Watson presided at the August meeting of the Marshland branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, and Mr Mark Rolls gave a talk and demonstration on phrenology. Hostesses were Mesdames Gibbs, Jarman, Ching, A. McFadden, Robertson, and Miss Wilson. Results of the competitions were as follows; Large bloom, Mrs G. Watson 1, Mrs Blackburn 2; small bloom, Mrs Quaid and Mrs Hurford 1 equal, Mrs Gibbs and Miss Innes 2 equal; tomato sauce, Mrs E. Treleaven 1, Mrs E. Kiesanowskv, 2; ’ . junior, Miss R, Wilson: babies’ clothes (for Lady Galway Guild). Mrs G. Watson 1, Mrs Gibbs and Mrs Ching,2 equal; junior, Miss R. Wilson.
BURWOOD WOMEN’S .r,3ISTITU!rE;
At the August meeting of the Burwood Women’s Institute the speaker was Miss Turner, and Mrs Young preslded. It was decided to support the appeal for the lepers at Makogai, and that the soldier’s parcel sent this month should be a double one for Christmas. Women’? Institute cookery books were sold. Mrs Rice presented her report on hospital visiting. Mesdames Rice. Mihkelsen, and Partridge were appointed visitors for the coming month. A profitable sales table was in charge of Mesdames Wilson and Kerr. Hostesses were Mesdames Munson, Mikkelsen, and Nankivell. Results of the competitions were as follows:— Something new from somethingbid: Mrs Wlndus 1, Mrs Jones 2, Mrs Freeman 3. Best bloom: Mrs Smythe 1, Mrs Freeman 2, Mrs Mikkelsen 3.
