HOCKEY

SATURDAY’S MATCHES

FIRST DEFEAT FOR RED CLIFFS

The outstanding feature of the eighth round of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s competitions played on Saturday was the defeat erf Redcliffs by Army. The game was hard from start to finish, but a slight element of luck turned the scale in Army’s favour. University beat Selwyn in a prolific scoring game by 7 goals to 4. Trinity showed better finish to beat Technical by 3 goals to 1. The Sydenham v. Wigram match was postponed. ARMY V. REDCLIFFS The game/ between Army and Redcliffs provided a close, even contest, in which neither team could afford to slacken for an Instant. An easy goal by T. Burtt was the only score of the game. The teams were:— Army.—J. H. Smith, J. Hamilton, L. Cook, N. Hardie, T. Burtt, B. Hall, J. 8001, J. Coleman, H. Mong, C. Harrow, D. Stewart. Redcliffs.—H. Barnhill. S. Bowden. R. Gray, D. Sundborn, E. Radcliffe, C. Papps, J. Donkin, J. Barton, N. Bowden, R. Fordham, R. Thomson.

The Army forwards played with brilliant combination and kept up a bustling attack all through.' J. Coleman played the best game of his career, and seldom made a mistake. Stewart had a tendency to juggle with the ball too much, but otherwise played clever hockey. T. Burtt, N. Hardie, and B. Hall made a clever half line that bustled the Redcliffs forwards and gave them little room to work. The Army backs, Hamilton, Cook, and Smith, set up a stonewall defence, Smith in goal being at his best and bringing off some brilliant saves. The Redcliffs forwards were erratic, neither wings playing good hockey. Thomson on the left had little of the play and was well marked by Hardie. The Redcliffs halves were bustled off their game, and but for sterling games by Gray and H. Barnhill the Army score would have been trebled.

Redcliffs was unlucky in losing a goal towards the end of the game, the whistle blowing for an infringement by an Army player just before the ball went into the net, and the subsequent penalty bully was cleared by T. Burtt. Umpires: Messrs E. M. Cummins and F. A. Iggo. TRINITY V. TECHNICAL

Playing with more dash and vigour Trinity had little difficulty in defeating Technical by 3 goals to 1. - The teams were:—

Trinity—D. Lester, E. Parrott, A. McDonald, B. Green, R. Crocker, T. Brown, K. Dickie, T. Thomas, L. Glentworth, C. Salomon, and C. Stafford. Technical—R. V. Taylor, N. Soper, N. Pullan, C. Green, C. H/ Matthews, W. Cole, E. Worsley, I. Jory, R. Levey, M. Elliott, and J. Oliver. The Trinity forwards played with plenty of dash and spirit, and kept well on the ball until it was in the net. K. Dickie, on the right, played an outstanding game, making some clever runs and centring well. Glentworth and Salpmen played at the peak of their, form and displayed sound ball control and nippy stick play. R. Crocker was the pick of a good half line, and the defence by E. Parrott and A. McDonald gave Lester in goal an easy time. The Technical forwards were outplayed, especially in the circle, where there was a lack of thrust in their . scoring movements. Pullan and Soper are playing well and Taylor in goal gave a sound display, stopping many hot shots. Glentworth (2) and Dickie scored for Trinity, and Elliott for Technical.

Umpires: Messrs W., H. Down and B. Clements. UNIVERSITY V. SELWYN

University gave a fine exhibition of positional play and combination to beat Selwyn in a prolific scoring game, by 7 goals to 4. The teams were:— .

University—D. M. Hall, E. J. Blackstock, B. Sloane, F. W. Seldon, C. V. Walter, T. Eggieton, F. B. Smith, S. R. Scott, W. Johnson, D, J, Cummack, and J. Devereaux. ' ■

Selwyn—W. Goodslr, J. Smythe, R. Shaw, L. Templeton, L. Harland, S. Down, A. Pullan, J. Overend, R. Scott, C.. Cornish and L. Dawe. . The University team snowed more combination than Selwyn. Passing the ball back and forth they had the defence well spread' out. 'The University half line is well balanced and feeds the forwards well ard breaks up any offensive movements in the early stages. The forwards are combining well and Vie whig men, F. B. Smith, and J. Devereaux, are both at the top of their form, E. Blackstock and B. Sloane are greatly improved and Hall, on his form, is very safe. Selwyn lacks a . good leader as there Is too much individual play. Neither wings are combining with the rest of the forwards, and the centres are misdirected and erratic. C; Cornish was the pick of a ragged line and was the only one with scoring ability. W. Goodsir, in goal, who was promoted from third grade, gave a fair display and his promotion was well merited. Goals were scored by Johnson (3). Devereaux (2), Smith and Cummack for University. Scbtt (2) and Cornish (2) scored for Selwyn. Umpires: Messrs E. Dash and L. Cummins.
