OBITUARY

MR C. H. AYLING

The death occurred, yesterday of Mr C. H. Ayling, a member of the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association since 1906. Mr Ayling, who took particular interest in Brabin Shield cricket, will be very hard to replace as an administrator of the game. Mr Ayling’s principal work was on the competitions committee. He joined that committee under the chairmanship of Mr A. Dey. Soon after he was elected chairman, a position which he held for many years. He was keenly interested in junior cricket, and was for a number of years a selector of the Brabin Shield team. In 1939 he was elected vice-president of the Canterbury Cricket Association, and in 1940 chairman of the management committee. His high experience in all matters pertaining to.cricket enabled him to carry on his duties in a very efficient manner. Very popular with players and public, he toured both islands as manager of representative cricket sides. , ... At the time of his death, Mr Ayling was president of ttuy Sydenham Cricket Club. He had also been club captain and secretary and treasurer of this club for a number of years. The erec tion of the Sydenham cricket pavilion by working bees was supervised by Mr Ayling, who was a prominent builder.

MR W. A. DUNPHY

Mr William Aloysius Dunphy, whose death occurred recently at Devonpprt, Auckland, was well known in Christchurch as a driver of coaches. For a long period he was a livery stable proprietor here, and had a reputation as a four-in-hand driver. About 40 years ago he owned and raced horses, and he maintained a keen interest in the sport until his death. He was 91 years, of age.
