WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

BELFAST Mrs Halligan presided at the monthly meeting of the Belfast Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ <Union. A variety of cures for a cold resulted from the roll call. Miss Kilner, president of the Redcllffs branch, gave a talk on flowers. Competitions resulted:—Egg-cup of flowers: Mrs Brown and Mrs Chapman (equal) 1, Mrs Farquhar 2. Rock cakes: Mrs Salt 1, Mrs J. Arps 2. Large bloom: Mrs Morton 1, Miss Crawford 2. Small bloom: Mrs Brown 1. Mrs Morton 2. DIAMOND lIARBOUR-PURAU BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Diamond Harbour-Purau branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held at the home of Mrs A. Jackson, Purau. Mrs Curtis gave a talk on the management of Stratheona Girls’ Training Hostel. Results of the competitions were as follows:—Arrangement of flowers: Mrs McKay 1, Mrs D. Manson 2, Mrs A. Jackson 3. Special bloom: Mrs D. Manson 1, Mrs A. Jackson 2, Mrs R. McKay 3. Jam: Mrs A. Jackson and Mrs R. McKay (equal) 1, Mrs J. Hunter 2, Winner of the monthly cup: Mrs R. McKay. V.A.D. COMMANDANT VISIT TO WAIMATE The Waimate V.A.D. Detachment received congratulations upon its efficiency from Miss E, P. Tennant, Commandant of V.A.D.’s for the New Zealand Red Cross, who spoke to the members of the importance of the work. The speaker commended the equipment and Red Cross practice room provided by the centre. Miss Tennant also addressed a meeting of the centre. She was welcomed by Mrs George Hennessy, chairwoman of the centre. In her general talk on Red Cross, Miss Tennant emphasised the need for the organisation in New Zealand to avoid contravention of the Geneva Convention by working for the fighting

forces. The speaker said that the Red Cross activities were confined to work for the sick, wounded and distressed, caused as a result of enemy action. Work for the fighting forces, though an urgent necessity, could not be done under the Red Cross banner.

As the guest of the Waimate Hospital Committee, Miss Tennant addressed a meeting of doctors and nurses and spoke on the aims, objects and work of the Red Cross. Mr A. Grant presided.
