COMMUNITY “SING”
MASTER BUTCHERS’ EFFORT Master butchers, who by their efforts last year "realised a substantial amount lor patriotic purposes, have decided to continue their community “sings’ again this year. The first of the series, held last evening in the Civic Theatre, realised 'more than £3O tov the Navy League and the Next-of-Kiu Society. The president, Mr A. Anderson, in welcoming the large audience, announced that in future the “sings” would be held every Tuesday evening until the end of October, and he thanked the artists who had given their services. In the absence of Mr T. Charters, who was unable to attend, Mr W. E. S, Furby, secretary of the Navy League, and Major H. G. Livingstone, for the Next-of-Kin Society, expressed appreciation of the work done by the master butchers. Mr J. S, Buckler was the efficient song leader for the entertainment, and songs by Miss Madge Nelson r nd Mr George Campbell were much appreciated. "The Lass from Lancashire” found herself in great demand, and received repeated encores for items made famous by Gracie Fields. Mrs D. Coles acted as pianist, and Mrs A, Warrilow continued her organ series which have become so popular at past community “sings.” One minute silence was observed at 9 o’clock. The City of Christchurch Highland Pipe Band, which led the procession of sea cadets through the square before the commencement of the programme, also played during the evening. Arrangements for the entertainment were made by a capable committee comprising Messrs A. Anderson (president). A. T. Dangerfleld (secretary), C. Welsford (treasurer), S. Hughes (past president), G. Sim, J. Parsons, J. Dingle, M. Smith, F. Horwell, P. Sherlock, J. S. Buckler, T, Edwards, and F. Nightingale;
